?? Youre Not Alone If You Think of Suicide On Your Job Search

?? You're Not Alone If You Think of Suicide On Your Job Search 34 You're not alone because many others think of it, and you're not alone because many others will help you avoid it. Photo by Ben White This is something I've meant to blog about for a while. I wasn't sure it would come across properly, but if this helps even one job seeker considering suicide, it's worth it. I regret not having done it sooner. Back in 2006, after my previous employer decided to outsource my entire team's work, I was living in Paris, France, and trying to find a job in Israel when I had the idea to start JobMob as a way to learn about blogging by blogging about that job search. I did ultimately find a job in Israel and we moved from Paris in 2007, but I kept blogging because I discovered that I really enjoyed helping other job seekers like you.eval There were also more selfish reasons. Among them, I thought that by learning more about job search as I blogged, I could protect myself from ever feeling job search depression again like I had back in 2002.eval Free bonus: Download The Job Search Depression Report which contains insights and resources on how to manage if you're too depressed to look for work. Looking back at it now, my job search depression was relatively light compared to so many stories I've seen since then, but that rough period of life really surprised me and made me realize that your career is no joke and your life can literally depend on it. I never considered suicide. However, the tough time brought back memories of two cute little boys I used to babysit as a teenager. They lived in a nice neighborhood, in a nice house, and their parents had nice cars who would go out often and to good restaurants around town. All until their father was let go from his white collar job. This led to a noticeable change in the house, even in the eyes of a soon-to-be former babysitter. Then one busy morning during rush hour, the father walked in front of a subway train. I was reminded of this story again when a JobMob reader emailed me for advice, saying: My situation stinks and I have contemplated suicide. I often find myself alone and depressed with no optimism for my future. I feel like a wounded soldier in battle who has been left to die in the trenches, after broken promises. Absolutely heart-wrenching. And not uncommon. Many job seekers reach this low point: Been almost 2 years without a job, honestly considering suicide at this point Can't get a job, feeling hopeless Joblessness And Hopelessness: The Link Between Unemployment And Suicide And many, many job seekers go all the way with it: Unemployment over the period 2000 to 2011 was responsible for 45,000 [deaths], an analysis in the journal Lancet Psychiatry has found. The authors say their findings suggest that suicide prevention strategies need to target those who lose their jobs even in countries unaffected by recession. They found the suicide risk among the unemployed was stronger where more people were in work and the situation of the jobless was therefore more unusual. My response to the JobMob reader began this way: Please don't commit suicide! It's a permanent solution to a short-term problem*, and I'm not glossing over it: I've been depressed myself and I know that it feels like “this is the way my life is now”. It's not. Seek help. At the very least, call a national suicide hotline asap (* a line I've heard Philip DeFranco say) If you're feeling this down or know someone who is, please, PLEASE, follow this advice. What Your Favorite Clothes Color Says about You

What Your Favorite Clothes Color Says about You Colors, whether vivid, light or subdued, add an interesting layer to some things. They can make a difference, whether in setting the mood or sending a message. The old ways of humans assigned certain meanings to every shade, with symbolisms that can both fascinate and caution. Clothing is not immune from that. In fact, the clothes you wear have become a form of self-expression. It is not uncommon to learn about your personality by looking at the color of clothes you wear. Most people have favorite colors that make their wardrobe choices unique. Some prefer darker hues. Others opt for vibrant shades. Whatever your choices are, one thing is certain: your preferred color is a reflection of your thoughts, feelings, and character.  The Vitality of Red There’s nothing like red to emanate intensity and passion. People who wear red are usually extroverted and outgoing. They exude dominance, impulsion, and aggression. They also tend to speak their minds without qualms. If you are planning to stage a seduction, then red is the best choice as it can draw the eyes. Red will do the talking and seducing. The Calmness of Blue Many people find tranquillity by simply looking at the sky or the sea. The color blue signifies calmness. It also means peace, loyalty, and security. Those who love to dress up in blue radiate confidence. They are usually sure about what they want. They are also known to have a deep sense of loyalty. The deeper shade reflects independence and self-control. The soft hues, like aqua and turquoise, can be soothing and reassuring. This is the color highly recommended when you are going to a job interview as it exudes self-assurance, prompting trust and respect from the interviewer. The Charisma of Green The color of nature, green has the ability to soothe and comfort. People who wear green usually have a healthy and balanced life. Although they are mostly social, they give off a mysterious and irresistible vibe. They are also the ones who advocate for the environment. If you want to be well-liked and make a statement about your social standing, then green can do all that and more. The Exuberance of Yellow Yellow oozes with cheer and positivity. Dressing up in yellow during rainy days can surely drive the gloom away. Those who love yellow are usually levelheaded, consistent, and goal-oriented. They are intelligent and creative. The color of sunshine, yellow can help you restore your focus and keep you inspired. Wear it at work if you want an extra boost. The Elegance of Black Black is the classic color that can be worn on almost any occasion. Versatile, timeless, and elegant, it conveys authority and a sense of power. Every woman must have her own little black dress, and any man must keep black formal clothing in his closet. It is the go-to color of most people because of its versatility and timelessness. Black signifies a strong will, analytical mind, and independent spirit. Wear black at work to reflect leadership, but be careful not to overdo it, or it will give off a harsh and unapproachable vibe. The Purity of White The color of innocence, white symbolizes confidence and optimism. People who wear white tend to be open in social settings and reliable in dire situations. They also seem to convey a new beginning, looking at things with fresh eyes, and the appetite to take on new challenges. Pick white if you are low on self-esteem and want to appear courageous and positive. Color Everywhere There are many colors to choose from, and you should never limit yourself into one hue. But it cannot be denied that we all have this one color we go to when we run out of ideas. It is not because we are playing safe, but rather, we have found that one color that suits our personality best. So next time you are thinking of having a wardrobe overhaul, think twice before confining yourself into one color. Keep colors that can help you set the mood and express the different parts of you. Just be careful not to shell out too much. You can always shop wisely. And if you sell clothes online, make sure to include the color personalities in your marketing. It will give your online shop the needed character to attract customers who are interested in the meaning of colors. Photo credit.

3 Ways Effective Onboarding Builds a Better Workplace

3 Ways Effective Onboarding Builds a Better Workplace A lot of organizations treat recruiting and onboarding like fishing: dangle the bait, hook ‘em, reel ‘em on board, and then…well, there isn’t a ton of concern about the fish’s experience after that. Many companies are able to attract new talent with a promising interviewing process, but they often falter with the very next step when they don’t provide an equally comprehensive onboarding program. They’re so focused on getting people in the door, they forget to pay attention to what happens after people enter the buildingâ€"and they end up leaving their brand-new, hard-won talent wondering what they signed up for. While savvy organizations have known this for a long time, BambooHR’s most recent onboarding study, which gauged the thoughts of more than 1,000 U.S.-based full-time employees, revealed just how impactful effective onboarding can be. An effective onboarding process helps build stronger bonds, increase confidence, and improve the overall employee experience. Building Stronger Bonds The study found some interesting facts about how the onboarding process impacts the bond between a company and its employees: Employees feel significantly more committed to an organization if they’ve received effective onboarding. This could be because the onboarding process helps them gain the tools and knowledge they need to be productive and happy in their roles. Investing in the employee, their overall experience, and their success translates into a stronger bond between employer and employee. Effective onboarding also helps employees feel more connected to co-workers, especially when the process involves getting-to-know-you activities and peer-to-peer training. These activities push employees to build stronger relationships that help them feel more connected to the organization. Effective onboarding also helps employees feel more integrated into the company culture, which is essential if a company cares to maintain its culture’s integrity. All new employees should be well-acquainted with the company’s culture and values, and effective onboarding allows new hires to understand each more quickly. Building Up Confidence Employees who experienced effective onboarding felt much more empowered to do their jobs: Effective onboarding programs should include highly detailed, comprehensive training so employees feel more able to perform independently. When employees are more confident in their abilities, they contribute more quickly to their teams, increasing the return on a company’s hiring investment sooner. Role clarity improves as well when effective onboarding takes place. Possibly because employees have a stronger connection to their managers or receive greater alignment through comprehensive training, employees who have experienced effective onboarding have a better understanding of their role within the company. Taking care to ensure new employees fully understand their role within the company is essential to building a confident and capable workforce. Building Better Experiences Overall, when employers have more effective onboarding in place, employees have a better experience at the organization: Onboarding is as much about training the employee on their responsibilities as it is about showing them all the amazing benefits of working at your organization. Taking the time to do just that during onboarding helps employees appreciate the company more and increases their job satisfaction. This also improves employee engagement, since employees more genuinely engage when they are invested in the organization. Effective onboarding builds a sense of trust and support between employers and their employees. It’s no surprise, then, that employees who feel their onboarding process was effective also feel more supported by their organization. Additionally, effective onboarding correlates with employees’ perceptions of the HR team and company performance. Those who went through effective onboarding were more likely to report that their HR team was highly capable and their organization performed strongly. Investing in effective onboarding is investing in your organization’s overall performance and business outcome. Business leaders need to assess how effective onboarding can positively impact their workforce and understand the costs that may incur as a result of sticking with insufficient practices. The benefits of a comprehensive program are clear and employers can no longer afford to keep ineffective systems in place. About the author: Kelsie Davis is the Brand Journalist at BambooHR.

Know How to Avoid the Black Hole - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Know How to Avoid the Black Hole - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career In this context, black hole is not a scientific term but, rather, the annoying situation when people apply for posted job openings and never hear back. It’s very frustrating because applying for jobs is a time-consuming effortâ€"too often with no results. But why is that state of affairs so prevalent? The answer is simple: because 72% of job applications are never seen by the human eye. Applicants need to understand that unlike in the past, most companies todayâ€"except for smaller onesâ€"are using a software application called applicant tracking system, or ATS. This software acts similarly to the spam filter on your e-mail whereby the majority of spams never reach your in-box, and therefore, you’re not even aware of them. How does an ATS work? The ATS scans résumés, culls relevant data, and plugs the data into predetermined columns by categories in its database. For example, the contact information at the top of the résumé gets plugged into the database so that the recruiter can sort it and search; the applicant’s education goes into a slot in the ATS assigned for education; and so forth. If such information does not get picked up properly from the résumé, the entire content might get omitted or placed in a different part of the ATS’s database. Typically, résumés contain section headers or job titles different from those the ATS is expecting. Assume a section title on a résumé says, for instance, “Further Training and Skills.” The wording may confuse the ATS, and, again, result in omission of the entire section or attachment of the section to another area where it does not belong and where it makes no sense. The human brain can deal with such variations and exceptions, but the computer cannot. Another example might be the existence of periods in the separation of the elements of a 10-digit phone number instead of what the ATS is expecting, which could be that the area code is given in parentheses, after which a word space follows, and then separation of the next three digits from the last four by a hyphen. There are of course many other such examples whereby the ATS is unable to properly code the information. How is the recruiter using the information the ATS presents? The recruiter can sort the information provided by the ATS by statusâ€"for example, interviewed, hired, offered, in review or rating at his discretion; geographic location; or information for future sorting. The recruiter can group applicants by skills or status or other criteria established as relevant to the candidate search. Conclusion Use conventional terminology when choosing section header wording. Check other résumés to see what’s common. This is not an area to apply your creativity to. Use synonymsâ€"for example, HR or human resourcesâ€"because you never know what query the recruiter is using. Best if you apply for only one position at a company. If you apply for more than one position, the second application might get ignored unless the recruiter is manually indicating that this is the second position you’re applying for. Use Jobscan software, with which you can compare the words used in the job description to better match the words in your résumé. A final word The logic of a job seeker is to apply for as many positions online as applicable. And that makes sense. I am reminded of the famous bank robber Willie Sutton, who was asked why he robbed banks. His humorousâ€"and logicalâ€"answer was, “Because that’s where the money is.” Indeed, recruiters have jobs to fill, but it is known too that the chance of a job seeker’s landing a position through a recruiter is around 5 percent. Most peopleâ€"60 to 80%â€"get their jobs by networking. So, how will you spend your time in finding a job?

The Power of Pull Marketing in Your Job Search CareerMetis.com

The Power of “Pull Marketing” in Your Job Search When searching for a new job, the primary method of contact has changed, so that employers overwhelmingly rely on online methods to contact customers. The parallels between searching for a job and most marketing campaigns are uncanny. You need a strategy for both, they both require tools like communication and the use of specific messages and specific proof points.Just like marketing, there are two main ways to get the word out during a job search. You can either ‘push’ the message directly to customers through samples, on-site demos, and direct campaigns via mail and calls. The second method is to attract customers to you through sales, promotions, and contests. This can be accomplished through methods like advertisements and blog posts.evalAs youcultivate your careerand improve your job outlook, it’s important to try out new tactics and find something that works. Despite the proven effectiveness of push marketing, it’s a method that’s easy to overuse, botch, and burns out .The term ‘pull marketing’ may be fairly recent, but the activity itself isn’t new by any degree. It has gained a lot of popularity, thanks to the rise in social media usage. What is Push Marketing Pull Marketing?Push marketing involves pushing your content or product to potential employers. Since you’re the product during the job search process, you’re effectively marketing yourself. This is the most common job search method and includes activities like:Applying for jobs on an employer’s website.Sending emails about your interest in a certain job to recruiters and employers.Submitting resumes for open jobs on company websitesInviting hiring managers and recruiters to connect on LinkedInPull marketing is the exact opposite. This involves developing a highly-visible brand around yourself to encourage recruiters and employers to seek you out on social media, via email, phone calls or request a copy of your resume. In contrast, to push marketing where you assume the potential employer is going to be interested, it involves activities such as:Commenting on relevant discussions on job board websites and sites like LinkedInCreating detailed posts on your blog or writing guest posts on popular blogsWriting keyword-rich status updates on LinkedIn.Why use pull marketing?Push marketing has been done and redone to the point of saturation. For most people, pull marketing will provide a breath of fresh air to a process that’s otherwise stressful and frustrating enough to have you quit halfway in. Pull marketing is far less direct than push marketing, so it is less stressful.evalAnother issue job seekers might encounter with push marketing is being too aggressive. If the measures used push recruiters and hiring managers too far, they tend to back away from you.Keep in mind that different companies talk â€" even rival companies like Google and Facebook will get wind of someone that’s a bit too handsy with their applications.1) It helps bypass applicant tracking systemsevalThe average company receives thousands of applications on a single job post. According to Forbes, 50% of resumes submitted via various job boards and company sites are screened and dismisseddepending on various criteria. This process is completely automated and such resumes are never viewed by a human. Most applicant-tracking systems are far from perfect. They are designed to save the employer time by separating strong candidates from the weak, not according to the content of the resume, but depending on how it’s written.evalFor instance, if you were applying for a job as a product evangelist, the system might scan for the word ‘evangelist’ in your application. If it’s not present, even if you decided to use a synonym, you’re out of luck. Some newer systems work better since they are able to account for synonyms, but a lot of enterprises still rely on outdated exact-match systems.Since pull marketing does not involve you actively seeking out the employer, it com pletely eliminates the possibility of being screened out by applicant tracking systems. You are also able to capture the employers’ attention in value-adding ways while setting yourself from hundreds of other applicants that are pushing content towards them.2) It works regardless of the state of the economyOne of the greatest challengesanyone is going to face is looking for a job when the economy is performing poorly. At such times, companies actively lay off workers, so the number of people in the job pool dramatically increases. In turn, the number of applications for open positions goes up, decreasing the chances you will be picked for any position at all.Pull marketing doesn’t involve you directly looking for open positions instead since recruiters are on the lookout for keywords and potential candidates that meet certain criteria. In other words, rather than fighting thousands of other people for the same job, you distinguish yourself from every other applicant looking for a job.3) Increases your visibilityPull marketing is all about increasing your visibility on the internet, so it shouldn’t be surprising that this is one of the goals it manages to achieve. Recruiters crawl through social media networks and use different search engines to find candidates that fit their requirements. When done right, pull marketing helps to boost this visibility. If you’re active in LinkedIn groups where recruiters are known to visit from time to time, you’re bound to be recognized by one of them, at least. The same goes for improving your visibility on Twitter, and, perhaps most importantly of all, search engines like Google. It will be difficult to get yourself to a level where recruiters Google your actual name to find out more about you. Instead, having a blog that ranks well on Google search is useful because it exposes both the content and your brand. It is also possible that you will eventually have people searching you by name, and when that happens, you wa nt to rank in the top ten when anyone searches for your name. The great thing about this strategy is that the more popular you are on Facebook or Twitter, the more likely you are to turn up as one of the top results. Don’t forget to link your social media networks with your website for the added benefit of directing traffic back to you.How to integrate pull marketing in your job searcha) Become a thought leaderevalBecoming an authority in your field is the most effective way of attracting recruiters. If you’re a name that people instantly recognize because of the work you’re done in the field, you shouldn’t have a problem having potential recruiters searching for you. There are several different ways of becoming a thought leader, but the most common and effective one of them is by providing content that solves problems. Not only that but actively engaging with the community to get your name out there. You could do this by being active in relevant communities. For instance, star t a blog that contains information that may otherwise be difficult to come across in your industry. Share that content with the community and interact with them. Make sure you update the blog regularly by posting at least three new pieces each week to keep your Google search ranking up.b) Volunteer moreevalVolunteering doesn’t just help your favorite charity with a bit of manpower. It’s also a highly effective way of improving your job prospects. Serving as a volunteer presents potential benefits like helping you develop new skills and gain experience in a field relevant to your industry.Besides, many companies aren’t all about business. They are expected to have a strong social responsibility core. Being a charitable person puts you in a good position, as it shows you are going to be a good cultural fit in the company.evalIf nothing else, volunteering adds a lot of depth to your resumeand can help potential employers notice you. Most companies also consider volunteering profe ssional experience. It’s okay to list the organization, the dates of service and, rather than state your role as a volunteer, use the responsibilities you had within the charity/organization as the title. Don’t forget to mention accomplishments, rewards, and results, just like any other job. Just make sure you don’t mislead anyone.c) Approach recruitersDepending on how popular they are, recruiters will often have information about job openings before they are made public. Since most companies don’t have the necessary resources to get access to top talent on their own, they tend to rely on recruiters. It works as a way of filtering out unqualified customers, saving time, money and a lot of effort.Recruiters regularly present candidates they think are qualified to the relevant companies’ HR departments. Approach different recruiters and register with them. When a new job opening pops up, you will automatically be on the list of recommended candidates depending on your qualifi cations, of course.Don’t be too lax about searching for a job once you have someone on the ‘inside,’ however. A lot of times, recruiters can’t help you even if they particularly like you due to reasons of your own doing. For instance, changing jobs too often, having a lackluster resume or irrelevant experience.ConclusionPull marketing may be a relatively new concept in the marketing industry, but it’s one that has found its place and not likely to go away soon. It is a highly-effective method of marketing (in this case, yourself) that involves having interested parties looking for you rather than the other way around.Getting started is the most difficult part when it comes to this method. Critical parts of the process can be automated, making it a little more approachable once you’ve established yourself properly.

7 tactics to Teach Millennials to be Top-Notch Sellers

7 tactics to Teach Millennials to be Top-Notch Sellers 7 tactics to Teach Millennials to be Top Notch Sellers Millenials have changed the structure of workplaces. Many members of the millennial generation have different expectations of what they want out of a career than those who may be hiring and managing them. Millennials have had easier access to information than any that came before them. Within seconds, they are able to retrieve data on just about any topic. For a group that has become accustomed to this type of access, management and training for the workplace needs to be strategic. As the first professional sports league to invest in developing its sales talent from a national perspective, Major League Soccer (MLS) is no stranger to the challenges of training a millennial. Through the creation of the National Sales Center (NSC), a high-octane sales training academy based in Minneapolis, MLS is on the forefront of developing innovative training approaches that address the nuances of the modern-day millennial. These are some of the foundational elements the NSC implements to successfully train a millennial: 1. Answer the “why” Millennials are apt to completely immerse themselves into something when they know why they’re doing it. Full understanding of the process and how it fits into the big picture is not just important â€" it’s necessary. This is something that the MLS National Sales Center hammers home daily. Trainees are never asked to complete an exercise without learning the reasons behind it and why it will ultimately make them better salespeople. 2. Foster collaboration Relationships are incredibly important to this generation. They tend to gauge their sense of importance within an organization not just on their job duties and output, but how they are treated by both peers and superiors. Millennials like to meld social with professional. They’ll work harder for a manager they see as both a mentor and a friend, and they will pour their hearts into an organization they consider their family. 3. Define roles and set expectations This doesn’t just mean slapping a nametag and title on their cube. Just like knowing the “why,” knowing the “what” is important, too. What is their impact on the organization? What is expected of them? Establishing these goals and expectations early on sets them up for a clear path to success. Set the expectations high, but be realistic. At the NSC, these expectations are summed up in a manifesto called the “No List,” which hangs in the office for all to see. The list is comprised of the negatives to avoid in order to achieve success within Major League Soccer. 4. Find out what drives them What is each individual’s passion? At the NSC, everyone has a shared passion: growing the sport of soccer in North America. But what is each individual’s true passion? “Within the group we currently have in session, we have a trainee dedicated to using the sport to fuel social change. We also have trainees born outside of the US, who have only known soccer as a way of life and see it not just as their passion, but as their purpose,” says Berryhill. “For each trainee, that passion started burning within them for different reasons. If we don’t learn that about them, we’ll never be able to get to the core of why they’re here and why they’re driven to succeed.” 5. Constant feedback Never before has a generation been so hungry for feedback and constructive criticism. They’re chomping at the bit to learn new skills and hone the ones they already have. The NSC records each call that is placed, and management regularly reviews the calls both in a group and individual setting. This has proven to be a great way to reinforce best practices while fine-tuning the skills of each trainee. 6. Continued education Millennials are far from complacent. Just as they have an appetite for feedback, they feel an urgency to acquire new skills through ongoing learning. The NSC introduces new ideas not by just teaching, but involving the trainees. They’re involved in active reinforcement on a day-to-day basis, and experience continued reinforcement through various alumni connections and communications after the trainees leave. 7. Build their confidence Confidence levels could be the difference between a strong or useless day in the office. Though there’s no one magic formula to build and sustain confidence, the NSC feels that it has found a good blend that works to fortify confidence in each of its trainees. Through its partnership with the Brave New Workshop, a Minneapolis-based improvisational theater, the NSC weaves the fundamentals of improv comedy into its curriculum â€" trainees even perform on stage. A cardinal sin in improv is saying “no” to your stage partner, so being part of an improv scene changes the way a person thinks over time, Berryhill said. “Improv has taught us to be receptive of whatever comes our way, forcing us to think on our feet.”
